We, the undersigned members of the Harlem community and concerned citizens, unite to voice our urgent concerns regarding the decision to convert the luxury condo located at 2201 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd into a shelter. WE WANT PERMANENT LOW-INCOME DRIVEN HOUSING FOR HARLEM RESIDENTS.
Our community stands at a pivotal moment, where transparency and accountability are paramount. Yet, the decision-making process behind this conversion lacks clarity, leaving us with unanswered questions:
- Ownership Transparency: Who owns the property at 2201 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd, and why has there been ambiguity surrounding this crucial detail?
- Community Consultation: Why was our community not consulted before this decision was made? Our voices matter, and our input should have been sought and respected.
- Discriminatory Practices: Why are certain voices being silenced, and why are organizers opposed to further shelter placements in Harlem being excluded from discussions? This selective vetting undermines the principles of fairness and inclusivity.
We are deeply troubled by Mayor Eric Adams’ dismissive behavior during recent community engagements, which reflects a disregard for our concerns and a lack of respect for our representatives.
As a community, we have taken legal action to halt the city’s plans until transparency and accountability are assured. We demand that Mayor Eric Adams, the Department of Social Services (DSS), and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) engage in meaningful dialogue with us, address our concerns, and uphold our right to a voice in decisions affecting our neighborhood.
Harlem’s residents deserve elected officials who prioritize their needs and listen to their voices. As elections approach, we will remember those who stood by us and worked for our interests. We will not accept decisions made without our input or against our best interests.

Head to the Bell Tower
The head of Harlem’s four historic parks – Tapashi Narine – mentioned in our HNBA meeting on Tuesday that the Marcus Garvey Park bell/watch tower will again be open for monthly tours.
Make sure to look at the NYC Parks Department website to see the dates, and then head up the Marcus Garvey Park acropolis and take a ranger guided tour of the bell tower.
The climb up is breathtaking and the observation platform is wide and unobstructed:
