Malcolm Shabazz Plaza; new arrival on its way to Harlem

Malcolm Shabazz Plaza is on the way—bringing new life to the iconic Malcolm Shabazz Market with a permanent, vibrant space for African culture, community, and commerce. Add in affordable housing and you’ve got a development rooted in pride, progress, and purpose.

Located at 52 West 116th Street, the iconic Malcolm Shabazz Market—known for its bold African style, culture, and one-of-a-kind shopping—will be re-envisioned as part of a new, permanent plaza. The project will preserve the heart and soul of the market while giving vendors and visitors a cleaner, more resilient, and welcoming space to gather and shop.

The development will also include the Malcolm Shabazz Mosque and 109 affordable housing units, strengthening Harlem’s commitment to culture, community, and access to housing.

This is an exciting moment for Harlem. The completed plaza is expected to spark pride, create new opportunities for local vendors, and bring long-term benefits to the community—making it a development worth watching.
