Wooden Shacks on 5th Avenue

In the 1980’s German and Irish immigrants unable to find affordable housing in Lower Manhattan gravitated towards Harlem, where wood-built properties quickly sprang up.

The picture above was taken at 98th Street and Fifth Avenue in East Harlem was taken in 1888.
