CORRECTION: HNBA Meeting Tonight at 2306 3rd Avenue, at 7:00 PM

Hello Harlem Neighbors,

Tonight at 7:00 PM (Tuesday) we will meet in person at 2306 3rd Avenue in the gorgeous Salvation Army building (sorry the incorrect location was sent earlier):

We are going to talk about public safety issues around the supervised injection site, and we are going to have a special guest – Special Agent Quintero of the FBI.

Special Agent Quinterro will talk to us about her work, her team’s work, and the FBI as a whole’s work on human rights violations, hate crimes, and color of law (corrupt law enforcement).  Make sure to bring any questions you have about these issues and how the FBI handles them and how it impacts all of us and our community.

Photography or recording is not permitted.

Moth Proof

A photo from the 1930s of a street scene in Harlem with a pawnbroker’s, a fruit and vegetable stand, and a grocery store.

The pawnbroker promotes that his business is “moth-free” and thus a safe location to pawn an article of clothing.

The grocery store has a number of brands that we would recognize today, even if the prices are quite different.

The fruit and vegetable stand has at least one customer peering in to look at what’s on offer – under the canvas shades (and burlap bags) to shield against the sun:

This otherwise quotidian scene has another component, a protest on the sidewalk against the fruit and vegetable stand:

The three men shown in the detail above look challengingly towards the photographer – perhaps wondering what is the purpose of the photographer as at least one of them protests the unfair labor practices of the fruit and vegetable stand’s owner.

Below is the street scene today. The Salvation Army dominates the block north of Harlem Hospital, with a speed camera and bus stop, and none of the vibrant street life depicted in the photo from the 1930s.

Holiday Concert

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

It’s that time of year where we celebrate family, friends and holiday spirit.  After years of social distancing, we are finally coming back together to celebrate the season with our Annual Holiday Concert.

Join us at East River Plaza on Saturday, December 17 at 11 am and 1 pm as we welcome the Sing Harlem Choir to fill the air with the sounds of the season.  Please share this invitation with your family, friends and neighbors.  The more the merrier!

Looking forward to seeing you.

Happy Holidays!

The Chronicles of Christmas Concert

On Thursday, December 15th, all are welcome to visit the Salvation Army building (125th Street, just west of 3rd Ave.) at 6 PM for a joyous and hopeful concert.

The Chronicles of Christmas Concert will feature neighborhood children and teens who are in the fantastic Salvation Army musical program.

All are welcome to attend and join in the holiday spirit.

Art In Marcus Garvey Park

Make sure to check out the sculpture by Reuben Sinha in Marcus Garvey Park (in the grassy lawn near the drummers’ circle).

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army wanted to let everyone know that it continues to offer its regular feeding program to anyone in need at their 125th Street location. Additionally, they reported to HNBA that their music school for children is running in a virtual format and currently have 35 children registered this semester.

Their East View residence has availability: https://www.eastviewnyc.com/ and their Social Service Office is open every Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Boarding

Victorian men and women boarding a steamship in Westchester (this part of The Bronx – under the High Bridge – was not yet a part of The Bronx or New York City), to head south to Harlem at 120th Street:

The larger night view of the precarious wooden pier and the High Bridge water tower looming above, can be seen below in the Harpers Magazine’s illustration:
