HNBA Meeting, Tonight at 7:00 (Zoom)

Tonight at 7:00 PM, HNBA will have our April community meeting on Zoom.

We’ve got two very interesting speakers on tap this month.  First up will be Emily Chingay from Open Plans, a group that would like to help Harlem neighbors have more say in how their streets are used (playstreets for children, outdoor dining, beautification plantings, trash bins, etc.).

The second, and main speaker, will be Blandon Casenave who has done extensive work on increasing Black admissions to NYC’s specialized high schools.  On Tuesday, Blandon will be speaking on the crisis of Black home ownership and the struggles of the Black middle class.  He notes that although Blacks are 24% of NYC’s population, they are 60% of the homeless and have an overall unemployment rate of 15% –  about triple the city average. Over the last twenty years Black New York has lost about 15% of its homeowners and 5% of its total population. This means that Black New Yorkers as a group are smaller, poorer and more vulnerable – despite the high number of Black elected officials.  Blandon will focus on research he has done on causes of this slide in the fortunes of the Black middle class and have a conversation with attendees on what kinds of legislation need to be in place to reverse this trend and support the Black middle class.

Here is the Zoom link for the meeting.  Please feel free to forward to anyone you think might be interested:

CORRECTION: HNBA Meeting Tonight at 2306 3rd Avenue, at 7:00 PM

Hello Harlem Neighbors,

Tonight at 7:00 PM (Tuesday) we will meet in person at 2306 3rd Avenue in the gorgeous Salvation Army building (sorry the incorrect location was sent earlier):

We are going to talk about public safety issues around the supervised injection site, and we are going to have a special guest – Special Agent Quintero of the FBI.

Special Agent Quinterro will talk to us about her work, her team’s work, and the FBI as a whole’s work on human rights violations, hate crimes, and color of law (corrupt law enforcement).  Make sure to bring any questions you have about these issues and how the FBI handles them and how it impacts all of us and our community.

Photography or recording is not permitted.

HNBA Writes to OnPoint and the Safe Injection Site

OnPoint NYC

East 126th Street

New York, NY. 10035

Attn: Sam Rivera, Executive Director

Dear Sam and OnPoint Team,

Thank you so much for joining our Harlem Neighborhood Block Association (HNBA) November meeting.  We really appreciate your time and now realize we should have held this meeting with you much earlier.

We are very interested in learning more about what can be done by your organization and the city officials who you regularly meet with, to address our main concerns – the open-air drug use and drug dealing which has exploded on our streets over the last year.  As you heard from resident after resident at our meeting, HNBA is asking OnPoint to adopt a community health model, and incorporate us, as your neighbors, and simultaneously address our needs and concerns in addition to working to save lives and guide your participants to health.

Our support for OnPoint and the work you do, is profoundly impacted by conditions we experience when we leave our homes.  We want a community where our children can play, where our seniors feel safe, and where everyone can enjoy the streets of Harlem.  Saying that Harlem was always this way is not acceptable.  We all need to do better, to expect more, and we hope OnPoint agrees this can’t be the excuse for the increased drug use and dealing we detailed to you.

Please let us know what steps OnPoint (and the city officials you meet with) intend to take.  If you would like, we would be happy to invite you to give us a brief (10-15 minute) update at our January meeting.

Again, thank you for attending our meeting and we look forward to continued discussion for a resolve both beneficial to OnPoint constituents and HNBA Neighbors.

Sincerely,

Hallia Baker, HNBA President

No Participatory Budgeting

Council Member Kristin Jordan Does Not Apply for Participatory Budgeting Funds

Harlem’s City Council Member Kristin Jordan has not applied for Participatory Budgeting money. As a consequence Harlem residents will not be able to propose exciting community projects that should be funded, nor will they then be able to democratically choose which of the proposed community project should receive funding.

Through Participatory Budgeting in New York City (PBNYC), community members — like you — directly could have decided how to spend at least $1,000,000 if Council Member Jordan had agreed to be a participating Council District.

PBNYC funds physical infrastructure projects that benefit the public, cost at least $50,000 and have a lifespan of at least 5 years. Local improvements to schools, parks, libraries, public housing, streets and other public spaces can be funded through this process.

For more information on participatory budgeting, including how to get involved, visit pbnyc.org.

Listen to the Council Member’s report on Participatory Budgeting to Community Board 10.

KRJ – No Participatory Budgeting For Harlem

Note how non-Harlem neighborhoods are actively submitting ideas on how to spend $1,000,000 in their communities while Harlem is left out:
