Ramadan Has Begun

Ramadan has begun. The month of Ramadan is a month of fasting, not a holiday, and therefore it is customary to greet people by saying “رَمَضان كَريم” (“Ramadan Kareem”) or “رَمَضان مُبارَك” (“Ramadan Mubarak,” Have a blessed Ramadan).

Ida B. Wells Doll

Ida B. Wells, the Black journalist who wrote extensively on the racial terror of lynching, has now been immortalized by Mattel as a doll in Barbie’s “Inspiring Women” series. The Ida B. Wells doll features the Wells posed as a journalist, wearing an 1800s-style high neck black dress, with her hair piled atop her head.

Wells was born into slavery in 1862 and was actively involved in exposing racism in the US, writing about race and politics in the South. She owned the newspaper The Memphis Free Speech and Headlight and was a vocal critic of segregated schools. Later, she became active in the anti-lynching campaign in 1892 after multiple friends were lynched. Wells also went to the White House to advocate for reforms.
